What Should Boiler Pressure be When Heating is on?

To achieve the most effective home heating system, it’s always important to keep an eye on the working order of your boiler. If you notice anything unusual, it is good to get any problems checked out by a professional before it fails. Luckily, boiler issues are usually quite easy to identify, and in some cases, you can even fix them yourself.

A typical boiler fault is normally caused by boiler pressure problems. A typical worry can be what the boiler pressure needs to be once the heating is on. Whether you have a conventional, system or combi boiler, it is important to know this information to avoid any potential danger.

Here is all you need to know about boiler pressure and central heating.

How High Should Boiler Pressure be?

In order for your hot water to properly circulate around your house, your boiler must have the correct amount of pressure. The pressure on your boiler can increase for various reasons. Every boiler is built with a pressure gauge to monitor the amount of pressure in your system. Typically, your boiler pressure should read between the 1 and 2 bars.

You should know that when your central heating is turned off and you are not running any hot water, boiler pressure should be at approximately 1 bar. As soon as your boiler begins to heat water, the water expands, which causes the pressure gauge to fluctuate.

Boilers have an in-built pressure relief valve to handle these jumps, so there is no need to worry even if the pressure gauge is showing in the read area. Once you have turned the heating and water off, the pressure should fall to a safe reading within a few minutes.

How Often Should I Check the Boiler pressure?

To check your boiler’s pressure, you need to find the pressure gauge. Generally, you’ll find a water pressure gauge on the front of your boiler. Normally, the pressure should stay relatively stable, so you don’t need to check it every day. However, it is a good idea to assess your system’s pressure at least once a month. You should do this particularly during the summer to ensure your boiler is functioning properly ready for the winter.

How to Increase Boiler Pressure

If your boiler pressure gauge drops below 1, you’ll need to top up your system, but before you attempt this, you need to ensure it is safe for you to perform the process yourself.

Afterwards, you will need to find the steps to do this according to your specific boiler model, which should display your boiler’s instructions. Please read them carefully.

Step by Step Guide

  • Turn off your boiler and wait for the system to cool
  • Locate the filling-loop and pressure gauge
  • Check that you can clearly see the pressure gauge while accessing the filling loop
  • Turn both filling loop handles until they are in line with the pipe direction
  • Observe the pressure gauge to make sure you don’t over-pressurise the boiler
  • Once the correct pressure shows, ensure the handles are closed
  • Turn the boiler back on and check if the pressure remains stable
